Holland Home Veterans Take Off On Dream Flights
On Friday, August 6, fifteen World War II veterans from Holland Home were recognized for their service with individual rides in a Boeing Stearman biplane, the exact aircraft many veterans trained with when preparing for WWII flying missions.
“This is the most World War II veterans we have seen from one senior living community,” said a representative from Dream Flights, a national organization dedicated to honoring military veterans and seniors through the experience of flying in WWII-era planes.
The thirty-minute flights took off throughout the day, with a break for lunch with friends, family, and other veterans of the community. After each flight ended, the participating veterans were given a sharpie to sign the tail of the plane.
"I could've still flown it," said Gelmer Romeyn, 98, who served in the U.S. Army during WWII. "I could take off easily enough, but I might have a bumpy landing."
Along with a grant we received, a donation from South-Kent Blue Star Mothers made the event possible. Thank you to Dream Flights for helping us to honor the Greatest Generation in such a unique way. We hope to make this a tradition and open up the opportunity for more veterans living at Holland Home.
