Holland Home: What Our Locally-Led, Mission-Driven Organization Really Means

With all Baby Boomers set to be 65 and older by 2030, our country’s cultural and economic landscape can be expected to take a shift. One industry that is booming is senior living. Not only will there need to be a larger number of communities to meet the growing demand, but larger corporations are getting more involved, acquiring organizations and managing them from afar.

Holland Home has been a locally owned and operated nonprofit since we first got our start over 130 years ago, and we have no intention of changing that. We have been and will remain a part of the community we serve. Our leadership works on the same campus where our residents live, allowing us to more efficiently and insightfully manage the ever-changing needs of our community.

Holland Home’s leadership all live in the Greater Grand Rapids area, ensuring decision-making is rooted in firsthand knowledge of the community and its needs. They have a vested interest in their community and, therefore, are deeply committed to the quality of care and well-being of Grand Rapids seniors and their loved ones. Our leadership actively engages with residents, staff, and families and has an up-close look at the day-to-day community operations, which allows them to make decisions in the best interest of the people we serve.

As a nonprofit, Holland Home’s priority is care, not shareholders or profits. All revenue is reinvested back into our community, improving care, facilities, services, and programming. Our faith-based mission guides us to follow Christ’s teachings and examples in all that we do. Providing the highest quality of care and services to our community is the focal point of our decision-making, not corporate financial targets.

While quality of care, activity offerings, and amenities play a big role in discerning which community might be right for you or your loved one, there are some added benefits to choosing a locally owned nonprofit like Holland Home:

  • Stability and consistency: Local leadership means long-term commitment, not short-term business strategies.
  • Community connection: A sense of belonging in a place where people truly care.
  • Personalized care: Decisions are made with residents’ best interests at heart, not in the interest of financial gain.

When choosing a senior living community, it’s important to look at the values, goals, and priorities of the organization. What are their priorities today? What is their vision for the future? Are they prepared to meet your lifestyle needs now and care needs years from now?

At Holland Home, our mission isn’t just words on a wall. It’s something we strive to live out each and every day. We’ve been providing compassionate care to aging adults in our community for over 130 years. This is not the first time in our organization’s history that we will be a part of a cultural, economic, and industry shift—we’re as ready to serve as we have ever been.
