My Life Flows on in Endless Song
Author: Robert Lowry, 1868

My life flows on in endless song
above earth’s lamentation:
I catch the sweet, though far off, hymn
that hails a new creation.

Chorus:
No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that Rock I’m clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
how can I keep from singing?

Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear that music ringing.
It finds an echo in my soul
how can I keep from singing?

What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
a fountain ever springing.
All things are mine since I am his!
How can I keep from singing?

“No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I’m clinging.  Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?”

Throughout my life different hymns have topped my list of favorites.  Is it any wonder that at my current stage of life I am moved by references to inner calm?  Anxious thoughts can crowd out feelings of calmness when I am awake at night.  The words of this song at times pop into my head, and since it is a rather new song to me, I’ve even gotten up from bed to look up words to the next line when I can’t recall them.  I like the reference to endless song above earth’s lamentation, the new creation with its far-off hymn, the ringing music over strife and tumult, the comfort of our living Savior when joy and comfort die, the springing fountain of peace to freshen my heart.  Comforting thoughts like that spontaneously prompt the question, “How can I keep from singing?”
