Deciding to move into a senior living community isn’t a snap decision. It’s a process—one that often begins as quiet conversations and online research, and then is often spurred ahead by health scares or lifestyle changes.
At our recent resident panel event, prospective residents were able to hear from current residents about the how and why behind their decision to move into Holland Home. Below, we recap some of the main takeaways.
Understanding the Waitlist
While 1-bedroom apartments are usually available, did you know that some residences have a waitlist of 5 years or more? So, even if you might not be ready to move quite yet, planning ahead and getting on the waitlist can ensure you get the community and residence of your choice when you are ready.
At Holland Home, you can be either active or inactive on the waitlist. Being active means you’re ready to move soon and will receive regular calls when residences become available. Being inactive means you’re not quite ready, but you still keep your spot in line with annual check-ins.
Resident tip: Don’t take yourself off the list, even if you’re not ready to move. Life can change quickly—health issues or the loss of a spouse may fast-track your plans. Staying on the list keeps your options open.
Challenges of Moving
Truthfully, downsizing is hard. Selling your house, sorting through decades of belongings, and parting with mementos can be emotional and overwhelming. Knowing where to even start can sometimes be the hardest part. We’ve hosted several discussions on this topic and have gathered many useful tips over the years. Explore our resources page for more information!
Resident tip: Start small, you don’t have to do it all at once. Tackle one room at a time and sort items into keep, donate, sell, and throw away to help keep things organized.
Holland Home Moving Support
Once you’ve decided to move, you’re supported through the entire process. Residents receive a $1,500 moving allowance, which in many cases covers all the moving expenses. Residents are also able to refurbish their new residence to their taste. We have a dedicated design team that helps you choose your finishes from paint colors to cabinets.
Resident tip: Holland Home offers one free hour of maintenance help. If you need photos hung or a TV put in place, they can help!
Why did residents choose Holland Home?
“It came down to trust. Holland Home is a large, well-run organization with a full continuum of care. That means if my health needs change, I won’t have to leave the community.”
“They are well-connected. I had a knee replacement, and their partner organization, Atrio Home Care, was able to come to me to provide physical therapy. That kind of support is invaluable.”
“What really sealed the deal was the people. The staff are kind, respectful, and always ready to help. The residents welcomed me with open arms. I never once felt like an outsider.”
What Life Is Like Now
As one resident put it, life doesn’t stop here—it expands. Our residents have found a vibrant, active community where there is always something happening. From book clubs to concerts and day trips, residents have so many opportunities to make new friends and have new experiences. While the move can be daunting and easy to put off, one thing we always hear from residents is, “I wish I had moved sooner!”
