Junior Volunteer Program

The Junior Volunteer Program at Holland Home allows young people the opportunity to work closely with senior citizens in our loving, Christian senior living environment. You must be at least 12 years of age to be considered an “official volunteer” in our system. Junior Volunteers are defined as follows:

  • Youth that are 12-13 years old, are allowed to volunteer with a parent, grandparent or guardian. The child must go through the interview and orientation process with their adult volunteer partner and will be assigned to work together at all times.
  • Youth that are 14-15 years old, may volunteer as a team with a friend or relative who is at least 14-15 years old. They must attend the interview and orientation process with their teen partner and will be assigned to work together at all times.
  • Youth that are 16-17 years old, may volunteer without a parent or partner, but at the discretion of the volunteer coordinator. Depending on where the youth will serve, the volunteer coordinator may require a partner of the same age or older for this age category.
  • You must demonstrate enthusiasm, maturity and desire to serve others.

Junior Volunteers may serve residents and assist our staff in a variety of ways including, but not limited to: mail delivery, leading games, assisting with special events, and serving refreshments. Most youth volunteers, with or without a parent/guardian partner, serve in general areas of our retirement homes, and in group settings.

We hold, by invitation up receipt of completed paperwork, junior volunteer orientations in the spring and the fall. We do expect at least a semester (fall or winter) or full summer (June through August) commitment in order to be considered for these volunteer openings. You must agree to volunteer at least once a week for the agreed upon time period.

To apply, please download the volunteer application. Bring the completed applications and two letters of recommendation to the volunteer office at either Raybrook Manor or Fulton Manor. You can find our addresses on the contact us page.

Health requirements

Students who are selected to participate must have two tuberculosis (TB) tests done in order to participate. If you can provide proof of a negative TB testing that was done in 2010, you will only need one TB test with us, which we provide at no charge to you. If you have never had a TB test, or if you only have one that is dated 2009 or earlier, you will need to have both TB tests in order to participate.

Orientation programs

Candidates who are selected to participate in a group interview and attend orientation will be contacted by the volunteer coordinator, who will invite them to sign up for one of these sessions. You may choose to attend one of two orientations the coordinator offers to you. If you are offered an opportunity to attend one of these, and cannot attend, we will not be able to offer you a volunteer position that semester (or summer).

  • You must be ready to commit to a minimum of 12 weeks (weekly schedule) during the June through August time period. In order to allow for family vacation or summer camp, you may miss 1-2 weeks, which do not need to be consecutive. Please bring these dates with you so we can note these dates in your schedule.
  • For fall and winter semester, you must also commit to a minimum of 12 weeks (weekly schedule), and you are allowed to miss only two weeks a semester for school or other activities. If you are involved in school programs, sports, and clubs, you will need to carefully consider if you can make and keep a commitment to us before applying.
  • In appreciation for your service, Junior Volunteers who complete the program will receive a certificate of achievement that includes cumulative hours of service provided.
